When people think of the Algarve, their minds often go straight to beach resorts like Albufeira or Lagos. Yet, quietly and confidently, Faro holds its place as the true capital of the region. More than just a gateway via its airport, Faro offers a lifestyle that blends culture, convenience and authenticity in a way that is often overlooked by overseas buyers.
Faro has a different feel to many of the Algarve’s more tourist driven towns. It is a working Portuguese city with a strong local community, a historic centre, and a year round atmosphere that appeals to those looking for something more than a holiday destination.
For buyers considering a permanent move or a second home with substance, Faro is well worth a closer look.
Why Faro is considered the capital of the Algarve
As the administrative centre of the region, Faro is where you will find key services, government offices (including AIMA) and one of the Algarve’s main hospitals. It is also home to the University of the Algarve, which brings a steady energy and international feel to the city throughout the year.
Despite its status, Faro has managed to retain its charm. The old town, known as Cidade Velha, is a walled area filled with cobbled streets, traditional architecture and quiet squares. It offers a glimpse into the Algarve’s past while sitting just minutes away from modern amenities, shops and restaurants.

Property prices in Faro
Compared to some of the more high profile coastal hotspots, Faro can offer better value for money, particularly for buyers who prioritise lifestyle and accessibility over resort style living. Property prices vary depending on location, condition and proximity to the marina or historic centre, but in general, Faro sits in a more balanced price range.
Apartments in Faro typically start from around €180,000 to €250,000 for smaller or older properties, while more modern or centrally located apartments can range between €300,000 and €500,000. Villas within Faro itself are more limited, but in the surrounding areas, prices often begin at around €400,000 and can exceed €800,000 depending on size and specification.
As always, the Algarve market moves quickly, and well priced properties in Faro are increasingly attracting interest from international buyers who want to be close to the airport while still enjoying an authentic Portuguese setting.
Things to do in Faro
One of Faro’s strengths is its variety. It is a city that can be enjoyed at a slower pace, yet there is always something to see or do. A walk through Cidade Velha leads you past historic buildings, small cafés and viewpoints overlooking the marina. The Faro Cathedral is well worth a visit, offering panoramic views across the city and the coastline.
Just beyond the city lies the stunning Ria Formosa, a protected natural park made up of lagoons, islands and sandy inlets. It is one of the Algarve’s most beautiful landscapes and ideal for walking, cycling or taking a boat trip. From Faro, you can also reach islands such as Ilha Deserta and Ilha do Farol, where you will find unspoilt beaches and a more peaceful atmosphere than many mainland resorts.
What not to miss in Faro
Faro has a few unique highlights that often surprise first time visitors. The Capela dos Ossos Faro, located within the Carmo Church, is one of the most unusual and memorable sites in the region. Built with the bones of monks, it offers a striking and reflective experience.
We also like to take our visiting guests on a tour o Faro's under city tunnels. Built by the Romans, these tunnels were used as escape routes when the city was under siege. If you look closely, you will notice some of the ceiling tiles have a braille equivalent roof markers so passengers could locate where they were in the city.
The marina area is another favourite, particularly in the evenings when locals and visitors gather to enjoy the waterfront. With a mix of traditional and modern restaurants, it is a great place to experience Faro’s relaxed social scene.
Our favourite spots for food and drinks
Bago Wine Bar - A really fantastic selection of wines They usually have live music on the weekend evenings, but the outdoor seating by the old city walls on warm evenings is also fab. Ask to try the Vinho Verde from the Azores (slightly salty and totally delicious).
Pigs & Cows -Restaurant is the perfect restaurant. For a set menu price you get to chose a start, main and dessert, but the choices are fresh, seasonal and delicious. It's a great spot as the husband and wife team make you feel instantly at home and welcomed. (Under 12's not allowed)
Monkey is a great option for a lively, tasty Asian food. It's a spot to eat but also sip cocktails and listen to the DJ.
CHECKin - Now if you are a foodie (like us!) then don't miss this place. A little on the pricier side, but worth every penny.
Hotel Occidental - Now hear us out. The rooftop bar is a great spot to watch the planes come in, and people watch from above. Amazing sunsets, tasty cocktails, but it's actually one of our favourite daytime spots to go have a coffee and watch the world go by. You do not need to be a guest to enjoy the rooftop bar.
Easy connections across the Algarve
One of Faro’s biggest advantages is its connectivity. The Algarve Line (train line) runs directly through the city, making it easy to travel across the region without relying on a car.
From Faro, you can comfortably reach towns such as Tavira, known for its charm and traditional character, or head west towards Portimão and Lagos for beaches and marina life. Even smaller stops along the way offer hidden gems that are perfect for day trips.
For international buyers, having Faro Airport just minutes away adds another layer of convenience, particularly for those planning frequent visits or hosting family and friends.
