The Algarve You Don’t See on Instagram: Where Should You Actually Buy?

Scroll through Instagram and the Algarve can look like one long stretch of golden beaches, white villas, infinity pools and restaurants overlooking the Atlantic. And while all of that exists, there is a much bigger question to answer if you are considering buying a property here:
Where should you actually live?
The Algarve isn't one single lifestyle. A coastal village in the Western Algarve can feel completely different from a traditional Portuguese town in the Central Algarve, while a countryside property just 15 minutes from the coast can offer an entirely different experience again.
One of the biggest mistakes we see overseas buyers make is choosing a location first based on how beautiful it looks online, and only later thinking about whether that location actually suits the life they want to live.
As a buyer's agent, our job isn't to sell you a particular area. It is to understand you, what you enjoy, how you want to spend your time, what you need from your home and what you want everyday life in Portugal to look like, and then help you work out where that lifestyle is most likely to fit.
The Algarve is much more than its beaches
For many buyers, the starting point is simple: “We want to be close to the beach.”
We hear this all the time. And understandably so. If you are moving to the Algarve, being near the Atlantic sounds like one of the biggest benefits of living here.
But there is an interesting reality that many people only discover after they move.
You may not visit the beach nearly as often as you imagine.
A 20-minute drive to the coast can feel like a long way when you are searching for a holiday home online. But when that extra 20 minutes gives you a substantially larger property, more outdoor space, a quieter setting and better value for your budget, it can be a very worthwhile trade-off.
There is also the reality of summer. The Algarve's beaches can become extremely busy during the peak months, with more traffic, more noise and, in some locations, considerably more competition for parking.
If you are buying a holiday home that you will use mainly in the quieter months, that may not concern you. But if you are relocating permanently, it is worth asking yourself whether being able to walk to the beach is genuinely more important to you than having the space and lifestyle you want at home.
Sometimes being 15 or 20 minutes from the coast gives you the best of both worlds.
Loulé: authentic Portuguese living with everything close by
One of our favourite examples is Loulé town. Although the municipality of Loulé encompasses some of the most exclusive areas of the Algarve, including the Golden Triangle, Loulé town itself has a very different character.
It feels authentically Portuguese, with a real town centre, traditional architecture, local cafés, restaurants and everyday life continuing throughout the year. At the same time, its location is remarkably convenient.
From Loulé, you can be around 15 minutes from Faro Airport, around 15 minutes from the coast and beaches, and around 15 minutes from several international schools.
That combination is difficult to overlook.
For someone relocating permanently, particularly a family, Loulé can offer the feeling of living in a genuine Portuguese town without feeling isolated from the international amenities and connections that many overseas buyers need. And importantly, you don't necessarily have to sacrifice countryside or outdoor space. The surrounding areas offer a wide variety of properties and settings.
Moncarapacho: village life with easy access to the coast
Further east, Moncarapacho is another area we think deserves more attention.
For buyers who want something more “country village” but don't want to be completely removed from restaurants, beaches and entertainment, it can offer an interesting balance.
You are within easy reach of the coast and the beaches of the Eastern Algarve, while Olhão provides a livelier atmosphere, restaurants, nightlife and everyday amenities.
This can be particularly appealing to someone who wants to wake up surrounded by a quieter, more traditional environment but doesn't want to give up access to a social life.
And that balance is important.
“Countryside” doesn't necessarily have to mean being completely remote.
São Brás de Alportel: beautiful homes and a strong community
Another location we particularly like is São Brás de Alportel.
The properties here are among some of the most beautiful we have seen, particularly for buyers looking for character, space and countryside surroundings.
But the town itself is equally important.
There is a lovely central square, a good choice of restaurants and a strong community atmosphere. There are also plenty of events throughout the year, including activities that appeal to the international community, such as charity quiz nights in English, alongside Portuguese festivals and traditions such as the Easter Flower Festival.
For someone who wants a quieter lifestyle without feeling completely disconnected from other people, this can be an important distinction.
Don't overlook the Western Algarve either
The Western Algarve has plenty to offer, particularly for buyers looking for dramatic coastlines, beautiful beaches and charming villages.
Salema, for example, is one of our personal favourites. This former fishing village has a beautiful beach, excellent restaurants and even a great gin bar. Importantly, it retains a lovely atmosphere outside the busiest summer months.
But the Western Algarve also illustrates why choosing a location based purely on holiday appeal can sometimes be misleading.
Some areas become considerably quieter during the winter. For some buyers, that is exactly what they want. For others, particularly those relocating permanently and looking for year-round social activity and community, it may not be the right fit.
There is no universally “best” location. There is only the location that best matches your lifestyle.
What kind of Algarve lifestyle are you looking for?
This is where we believe the property search should really begin.
Instead of asking “Where is the best place to buy in the Algarve?”, we would encourage buyers to ask: “What do I actually want my everyday life to look like?”
For someone relocating permanently, places such as Loulé, Boliqueime, Lagos and Tavira can offer a strong balance of amenities, community and lifestyle.
A couple looking for a second home may place greater importance on convenience and accessibility, making areas around the Golden Triangle particularly appealing because of their proximity to Faro Airport.
For those wanting peace and countryside, areas around Moncarapacho, Monchique, São Bartolomeu de Messines and Santa Bárbara de Nexe are worth exploring.
If restaurants and a more active social life are priorities, locations including Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo, Vilamoura, Lagos, Portimão, Faro and Olhão offer very different versions of that lifestyle.
Families may want to consider Loulé, Boliqueime and Almancil, particularly where access to schools and everyday amenities is important.
And for those travelling regularly, areas around Olhão, Almancil and Faro can make airport access much easier.
Meanwhile, buyers specifically looking for an authentic Portuguese environment might find Loulé town, São Brás de Alportel, Olhão, Tavira or Ferragudo more appealing than some of the larger resort destinations.
For investment buyers, the considerations are different again, with locations such as Carvoeiro, Salema Beach Village Resort, the Old Town of Albufeira, Vilamoura, Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo potentially offering different investment opportunities depending on the strategy.
The important point is that the right answer changes depending on the person asking the question.
A 15-minute drive isn't always just a 15-minute drive
When comparing locations, buyers often focus heavily on driving times.
“We're only 20 minutes away.”But what does those 20 minutes actually look like?
A 20-minute drive along a straightforward road with good visibility, shops and amenities along the way can feel completely different from a 20-minute journey along narrow, winding mountain roads.
This is particularly relevant in areas such as Monchique, where the scenery can be spectacular but the roads and terrain are very different from the more straightforward routes through parts of the Central Algarve.
Likewise, a property that is technically 15 or 20 minutes from a town may feel much more convenient if the journey is easy, direct and takes you past the places you actually need to visit.
When we assess locations with our clients, we therefore don't just consider the distance. We consider the journey itself, the roads, traffic, amenities, scenery and practicalities of getting from A to B.
Visit at the right time of year
Another important consideration for overseas buyers is when you come to view properties.
August can be a particularly poor representation of what life in the Algarve is like for much of the year. It is peak season. Roads can be busier, beaches can be crowded, parking can be difficult and tourist areas can feel considerably more lively than they do during the rest of the year.
If you are planning to live in your property year-round, it is important to understand what your chosen location feels like beyond the summer months. Equally, if your intention is to rent the property throughout the year and only use it yourself during August, then perhaps August is exactly when you should be considering it.
The right viewing period depends on how you intend to use the property.
Sometimes the right location changes as we get to know you
One of the most rewarding parts of our work is seeing how a property search can evolve as we learn more about a client.
Recently, we worked with a couple from the US who initially wanted to relocate to the Western Algarve. They were looking around Praia da Luz, Burgau and Budens.
As we talked more, however, we understood that what they really wanted was a sea view, not necessarily to be directly on the coast, combined with a strong sense of community and year-round activity.
That changed the search.
Some of the quieter Western Algarve locations they had initially considered could become considerably quieter during the winter months, which wasn't necessarily going to give them the year-round community and liveliness they were looking for. Their search eventually moved towards the Central Algarve, where we could find properties that better matched their actual lifestyle.
Another example involved a younger couple in their twenties or early thirties who were relocating from city life in Holland. They initially wanted to look around Monchique because they loved the idea of countryside, land and beautiful rural properties.
But after getting to know them, we felt that moving directly from a major city into a very rural part of the Algarve might not give them the social lifestyle they were used to.
Instead, we explored areas around Loulé and Portimão.
They could still have the space, land and countryside views they wanted, but with major towns, restaurants and social opportunities only a short drive away.
They ultimately found their forever home.
That is why we don't believe in simply sending clients every property that happens to match a list of search criteria.
The Algarve isn't one-size-fits-all
The property itself is only one part of the decision.
You might find the most beautiful villa you have ever seen, with the perfect pool, garden and sea view, but if you discover six months later that you don't enjoy the location, it won't feel like your dream home anymore.
Before searching for properties, think about your life.
What do you enjoy doing? Where do you want to spend your weekends? Do you want to walk to a café in the morning? Do you want restaurants nearby? Are you happy driving everywhere? Do you need access to an international school? Will you be travelling regularly? Do you want neighbours and community, or privacy and space?
And perhaps most importantly: What do you want your ordinary Tuesday in Portugal to look like?
That question can tell you far more about where you should buy than an Instagram photograph ever will.
This is where a buyer's agent can make a difference
At The Buyer's Agent Algarve, we aren't real estate agents representing a portfolio of properties. We work with our clients.
That means the process isn't simply about us sending you endless properties that we happen to like the look of. We start by understanding what matters to you, what you want from your lifestyle and what you need from your new home. Then we can help you explore the locations that could actually work.
Sometimes that means showing you properties in the area you originally had in mind.
Sometimes it means suggesting somewhere completely different. And sometimes it means telling you that a particular location probably isn't right for you.
Because finding a property is relatively straightforward.
Finding the right place to live is much more personal.
If you're considering buying in the Algarve and aren't sure where to begin, talk to us about the lifestyle you're looking for, what you enjoy doing, what matters to you in a home and what you want your life in Portugal to look like.
We'll help you work backwards from there, and find the Algarve that fits you, rather than simply the Algarve that looks best on Instagram.
