What's On in the Algarve: Easter 2026 Guide

We have woken up today, Monday 23rd March, to bright warm sunshine and a feeling that Summer is just around the corner. But hold on, first let's enjoy Spring and it's big celebration hero - Easter!

Easter in the Algarve is one of those times of year where the region quietly comes to life. The winter months begin to fade, the days stretch a little longer, and there is a noticeable shift in atmosphere. Cafés feel busier, events return to town squares, and there is a sense of anticipation ahead of the summer season.

With Easter Sunday falling on 5 April 2026 , the Algarve's calendar is filled with a mix of traditional celebrations, cultural events, family activities and seasonal food festivals. Whether you are visiting for a short break or spending more time exploring the region, there is far more happening than you might expect.

This guide brings together some of the key events across the Algarve, while also giving you a feel for what Easter here is really like.

Traditional Easter Celebrations Across the Algarve

At the heart of Easter in Portugal is Semana Santa, or Holy Week, which runs from 29 March to 5 April 2026. Towns such as Tavira, Faro, Santa Luzia and Cacela Velha, you will find a series of processions, church services and community gatherings that mark this important time of year.

Good Friday is typically the most solemn, with candlelit processions moving through historic streets, while Easter Sunday brings a more celebratory atmosphere, with families gathering for long lunches and local bakeries filled with traditional folar bread.

Even if you are not religious, these events offer a glimpse into the Algarve's traditions and community spirit.

The Flower Torch Festival in São Brás de Alportel

One of the most unique and visually striking events in the Algarve takes place on Easter Sunday, 5 April 2026, in São Brás de Alportel.

The Festa das Torchas Floridas (Flower Torch Festival) transforms the town into a sea of colour. Streets are lined with intricate carpets made entirely from fresh flowers, and locals carry beautifully decorated floral torches in a joyful procession.

The festival officially opens at 9.30am, where you can stroll the streets and view the flower carpets and really soak it all in. The Resurrection Procession begins at 11am. This is where the beautiful flower torches are carried through the town to the church. It's a joyful sight and well worth seeing. The 'main' festival celebrations begin at 3pm, where there are music, and food and crafts stalls throughout the main square.

It is one of those events that feels both celebratory and deeply rooted in tradition, and it draws visitors from across the region each year.

Loulé's Festa da Mãe Soberana

Loulé hosts one of the Algarve's most important Easter celebrations, the Festa da Mãe Soberana.

The first part of the festival, known as the Festa Pequena, takes place on Easter Sunday (5 April 2026) whereby a statue of the patron saint is carried down from it's sanctuary in Igreja de Nossa Senhora to Igreja de São Francisco. (We will never forgot in Lockdown how hundreds of pilgrims came to Loulé to watch the transport of the patron saint, whilst socially distancing. It was an incredible sight and had a strong emotional feel.)

The Rosary prayer usually starts at 4pm, but we recommend getting there earlier. The procession will then begin around 5pm and is a slow march. The 'small festival' usually ends around 7pm.

The statue remains at the Church of São Francisco for two weeks, until the 'Big Festival' on 19th April 2026, where the statue is carried back up the hill. This event is known for its energy, music and incredible sense of community, and it is considered the largest religious festival in southern Portugal.

Food, Fairs and Local Traditions

Easter in the Algarve is just as much about food as it is about tradition.

Across the region, you will find folk fairs and Easter markets celebrating local bread, sweets and handmade products. In places like São Marcos da Serra and Odeceixe, these events bring together local producers, artisans and families in a relaxed, village atmosphere.

In Paderne, near Albufeira, the annual exhibition showcases traditional Easter cakes, seasonal sweets and handcrafted goods, organized by the Parish Council with support from the local municipality.

A Different Side of the Algarve

What makes Easter in the Algarve particularly special is the balance between tradition and lifestyle.

You can spend the morning watching a centuries-old procession, the afternoon walking along the beach, and the evening enjoying a long dinner with friends. It is a time of year that feels authentic, relaxed and full of small moments that make you appreciate what life here can offer.

For many people, it is also when the Algarve starts to feel less like a holiday destination and more like somewhere you could truly live.

Easter is one of the best times to experience the Algarve in a more genuine way. The region is lively, but not crowded. The weather is warm, but not intense. And the events give you a real insight into local life.
