How to Obtain a NIF Number in Portugal

How to Obtain a NIF Number in Portugal

A NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is your Portuguese tax number. You will need one to:

  • Buy property

  • Open a bank account

  • Set up utilities

  • Sign contracts

  • Pay taxes

In short, it's one of the first things you should arrange when planning a move to Portugal.

Option 1: Apply in Person in Portugal (The most cost effective route)

You can apply for a NIF at:

  • The Tax Office

  • Or certain Loja do Cidadão (Citizen Shops)

What to take with you:
  • Passport

  • Proof of your home address (from your home country is acceptable)

  • A small administrative fee (if applicable)

The process usually takes around 20–30 minutes per person. Each individual (including children) requires their own NIF.

Some Loja do Cidadão locations can issue a NIF, Social Security number and User (health number) at the same appointment. Availability varies by location.

Do You Still Need a Tax Representative

Previously, non-EU residents were required to appoint a Portuguese fiscal representative.

This requirement has largely been replaced by the option to register for electronic tax notifications , meaning many non-residents no longer need a fiscal representative.

However, regulations can vary depending on your situation, so it's always worth confirming your specific circumstances at the time of application.

Option 2: Apply Online

In some cases, you can request a NIF remotely by contacting Finance directly or through the government portal.

Online applications may require:

  • Identification documents

  • Proof of address

  • A Portuguese tax representative (depending on residency status)

If you are arranging a property purchase from abroad, this can be a practical route before traveling to Portugal.

Option 3: Use a Professional (Most Straightforward)

Many buyers choose to appoint a lawyer or accountant to obtain their NIF on their behalf.

This is particularly useful if:

  • You are not yet in Portugal

  • You are progressing quickly with a property purchase

  • You prefer professional handling of documents

Fees vary, so always confirm costs in advance. You may be asked to sign a limited Power of Attorney to allow the professional to act on your behalf.

Accessing the Tax Portal

Once your NIF is issued, you can request login details for the Portal das Finanças (the Portuguese tax website).

Your password is typically sent by post to the address registered against your NIF.

Through the portal you can:

  • Manage tax correspondence

  • Update your address

  • Register for electronic notifications

  • Manage fiscal representation

Changing Your Address Later

If you move to Portugal permanently, you will need to update your tax address.

This can be done:

  • Online via the Finance Portal (e-service), or

  • In person at a Finance office or Citizen's Shop (by appointment)

You will need proof of your new address and, if applicable, details of any fiscal representative.
