Things to Do on a Rainy Day in the Algarve

(Because even sunny places have their grey days — and they are still worth enjoying)
The Algarve is famous for its incredible weather, with around 300 days of sunshine each year that draws visitors from across Europe and beyond. But every now and again, especially through the winter months or during Atlantic weather systems, the skies can turn grey and the rain can roll in.
Rather than seeing a rainy day as a pause in your plans, think of it as a chance to experience another side of the Algarve. Whether you live here, are on a property viewing trip or are planning your next visit, rainy days can be just as memorable as sunny ones.
Below we've broken down great ways to spend a rainy day by region — East, Central and West Algarve — with suggestions for indoor play, cosy meals and weather-proof outings.
East Algarve
Museums
The eastern Algarve, including towns like Faro, Olhão and Tavira, offers several cultural stops that are perfect in wet weather. Explore regional history at archaeological museums, or visit historic buildings like the Estoi Palace — a stunning Baroque and Rococo complex near Faro that is fully sheltered and rich with architectural detail. On a rainy day visit this beautiful building, have a coffee in the bar and watch the gardens and the landscape that extends to the sea.
In Olhão, the charming Mercado Municipal is an indoor classic. Under its covered pavilion you will find fresh produce, fish, regional cheeses and pastries alongside cafés where you can enjoy lunch while the rain passes.
Shopping Malls and Cinemas
Faro's Forum Algarve houses shops, cafés and a modern cinema with screenings in original language versions, making it a go-to destination for escaping from the rain. Nearby, MAR Shopping Algarve in Loulé is another excellent choice with boutiques, dining and leisure options all under cover.
Look out for film names followed by ‘VO’ which means it is in its original version. If you see ‘VP’ it is dubbed into Portuguese. Most films are with Portuguese subtitles but children’s films are dubbed during the day and sometimes shown in their original version later at night.
Classes and Workshops
The eastern Algarve has creative spaces and craft studios where you can try your hand at Portuguese traditions like tile painting or pottery. Local historic centres often host workshops in arts and crafts that are delightful rainy-day pursuits.
Personally we like La Brava Studio in Faro.
Rainy-Proof Beach Bars and Restaurants
Even when it is raining, the coastline is still spectacular from the comfort of a sheltered table. Ferragudo and surrounding towns have beach bars and restaurants with big windows and covered terraces where you can enjoy seafood and local wines with dramatic sea views.
Café Aliança is the oldest café in the city of Faro and the one with the most important cultural tradition. It occupies the ground floor of a historical building of revival architecture, in Rua de Santo António, the main street of downtown – so if you are visiting Faro for the day, it’s not one to be missed.
Outdoorsy Options
Just because it is raining does not mean you need to stay indoors the whole day. A stroll in Ria Formosa Natural Park can be invigorating in light rain, with protected boardwalk sections and abundant birdlife to discover.
Other Points of Interest
In the east you can also find casinos that offer entertainment, culinary experiences and even shows — a festive way to spend a rainy evening without stepping back into the weather.
Central Algarve
Museums
Around Albufeira, Loulé and Vilamoura, you'll find small museums and cultural centres that reveal local heritage and art. These are perfect introspective stops when the skies are grey and you want to soak up some local history.
Shopping Malls and Cinemas
The central Algarve boasts some of the largest shopping and cinema complexes in the region. Algarve Shopping in Guia and Aqua Shopping in Portimão combine shops, restaurants and family-friendly entertainment under one roof, making them ideal rainy-day destinations.
As mentioned above, cinemas in these centres show films in original languages with Portuguese subtitles, providing a classic refuge from the rain alongside popcorn and coffee.
Classes and Workshops
Creative studios in the central region often run mosaic or clay workshops where you can craft your own piece of Algarve memorabilia. These interactive experiences are both relaxing and memorable.
Check out Loule Criativo website for more info on their classes.
If there are a group of you, then you can contact Sip & Paint to arrange a private class at one of their regular venues near you, or even in your home / rental villa.
Rainy-Proof Beach Bars and Restaurants
Central Algarve seaside towns like Praia da Rocha, Carvoeiro and Albufeira Marina have cozy beach bars and restaurants with covered terraces and warm interiors, perfect for watching stormy seas with a glass of verde wine or a seafood cataplana.
But given it’s a rainy day and the view out to see may not be as nice why not go explore inland restaurants and discover something new? We love A Tia Bia and L’Auberge for good quality homely food in a beautiful setting.
Outdoorsy Options
When the rain lights up, a walk along covered promenades or through quiet marina areas can be a peaceful way to experience the coast in a completely different mood.
Other Points of Interest
For a touch of excitement, the central Algarve has indoor karting tracks and bowling alleys, which are both fun options for families or groups looking to stay active despite the weather. The nearby Aquashow Indoor Park in Quarteira is a fully covered water park that brings tropical fun to a rainy day and is especially great for children. Though have a spa-zone too for a more relaxing experience for adults.
Casinos in Vilamoura and Portimão also provide elegant evening entertainment with games, shows and dining. In fact most even open from 3pm so you can do this a later afternoon session before going to dinner. They can be quite costly (with the average stake minimum being 5€).
West Algarve Museums
The western Algarve, including Lagos, Sagres and Portimão, has fascinating local museums such as archaeology museums and maritime history exhibits. These indoor cultural stops allow you to dive into stories of the sea and exploration.
Art Inspirada Art Gallery in Lagos has a good range of artwork (and often runs painting classes for all levels). You also have The Lady In Red Art gallery – which has recently relocated to Portimao (which we are quite sad about as their Lagoa location was a real talking point and day out). Lady in Red probably has one of the large varieties of artwork.
In Lagos marina you can find the Portuguese Discovery wax museum which is a great way to learn more about the famous explorers and maritime history of this region.
Shopping Malls and Cinemas
While the west has fewer big shopping centres, local boutiques and galleries in town centres offer charming indoor browsing. For larger malls and cinema complexes, a short drive to Portimão or Guia brings plenty of sheltered options.
Classes and Workshops
Creative classes in the west include pottery and art studios where you can learn new skills or paint your own azulejo tile — a wonderful souvenir and a way to make the most of indoor time. If you would rather look but not make, then head to Porches Pottery which is a very traditional pottery close to Carvoeiro (with a great little café next door!).
Okay – so not quite a ‘class’ but you will certainly learn something - why not go wine tasting at the beautiful Morgado do Quintao. You may be lucky and have a break between the rain and can go around the vineyards, but if it’s heavy rain they have a lovely indoor tasting room which you can paid with farm-to-table food which complements the wine.
Rainy-Proof Beach Bars and Restaurants
West Algarve coastal restaurants, especially near Lagos' old town or Praia da Luz , offer warm, protected dining spaces with stunning views of the Atlantic even in wilder weather. A rainy day can make these views even more dramatic and memorable.
Luar da Foia in Monchique is a great option I the mountains of Monchique.
We are partial to a G&T in Tivoli Hotel in Carvoeiro for views over the bay. Even in the rain this is a special spot.
You can watch the fishing boat come back in, from the sheltered terrace of the hidden bar, Escondidinho on Praia Grande by Ferragudo.
For a truly special day out, try Arte Nautica beach restaurant in Armação de Pêra.
Outdoorsy Options
While heavy rain might keep you indoors, lighter showers reveal a wild, natural mood along beaches like Praia da Arrifana, where dramatic cliffs and powerful waves create a striking atmosphere that is worth witnessing from good shelter spots or scenic viewpoints with cover.
If it’s spitting but not overly foggy, then a hike to Fóia Monchique is different view that will not be forgotten.
If you are going to get wet anyway, then why not try a surfing lesson? The surf schools don’t usually cancel their classes when it rains just a splattering, but of course use your judgement on more heavy downpours.
Other Points of Interest
Why not check out the Thermal Spa in Monchique? With a PH of 9.5, Monchique water is the most alkaline in Portugal and one of the most alkaline in the world. It’s an experience not to be missed – and the views as you journey up are truly stunning. (It is currently undergoing a facelift throughout, so some parts are still a little dated, but the location is still so beautiful.)
Why not combine a few of the above, and take a train journey? The train line runs from Lagos in the west to border with Spain at Vila Real de Santo António.
Embracing Every Season
Rainy days in the Algarve are rare compared to much of northern Europe, but when they arrive they bring a chance to experience local life in a completely different way. Whether you choose to wander through museums in the east, browse shopping centres in the central region, enjoy sheltered seaside dining in the west, or get creative with workshops and indoor parks, there is always something to enjoy.
Next time the skies turn grey, think of it not as an interruption, but as an invitation to discover the Algarve's indoor treasures and local gems.
