Beyond the Beach: 12 Wonderful Things to Do in the Algarve This August (Without Getting Sand Between Your Toes!)

When people think of August in the Algarve, they often picture packed beaches, colourful umbrellas and scorching afternoons by the sea. While our coastline is undoubtedly one of the region's greatest attractions, there is so much more to discover beyond the beach.

Whether you're visiting for a holiday, exploring the Algarve ahead of a property purchase, or already lucky enough to call this beautiful region home, August is packed with festivals, outdoor events and hidden inland gems that don't require a towel, flip-flops or sandy feet.

Here are some of our favourite ways to enjoy the Algarve this August.

1. Cool Off in the Natural Springs of Alte

If you're looking to escape the crowds, head inland to the beautiful village of Alte, often described as one of the Algarve's prettiest villages.

The Fonte Grande canal offers crystal-clear spring water where you can paddle or cool your feet while enjoying the peaceful surroundings. Although the public BBQ facilities are currently unavailable, there are two lovely cafés overlooking the water where you can enjoy lunch or a refreshing drink.

A short walk away you'll find the Queda do Vigário waterfall, where locals often spend the afternoon relaxing on the grassy banks with a picnic while listening to the sound of the flowing water.

It's a completely different side of the Algarve and one we highly recommend.

2. Step Back in Time at the Silves Medieval Festival

Throughout August, the historic town of Silves transforms into one of Portugal's most spectacular medieval festivals.

As the sun begins to set, the ancient streets come alive with knights, jesters, musicians, dancers and market traders dressed in authentic medieval costume. Visitors are encouraged to join in the fun by dressing up themselves, making it an unforgettable evening for both adults and children.

One of the best parts? The festival begins later in the day, meaning you can enjoy the entertainment in the cooler evening temperatures rather than the intense August sunshine.

3. Experience FATACIL

For many Algarvians, August simply wouldn't be complete without a visit to FATACIL.

Held in Lagoa from 21st to 30th August 2026, FATACIL is the Algarve's largest fair celebrating handicrafts, agriculture, tourism, food and regional culture.

During the day you can browse hundreds of stalls selling artisan products, local delicacies and traditional crafts from across Portugal. As night falls, the atmosphere changes completely as thousands gather for the headline concerts.

This year's programme includes Tony Carreira, Hybrid Theory, Sara Correia, Richie Campbell, Quim Barreiros, Plutónio, Nininho Vaz Maia and many more, making FATACIL one of the biggest events in the Algarve calendar.

4. Join the Tradition of Banho 29 in Lagos

Technically this one does involve the sea... but probably not in the way you're expecting!

Every year on the night of 28th August, thousands gather in Lagos for the traditional Banho 29 celebration. Local tradition says that taking one midnight swim on this special night is equal to twenty-nine sea baths and symbolises renewal before summer comes to an end.

Even if you don't fancy taking the plunge yourself, it's a wonderful evening to experience. The streets are filled with music, food stalls and celebrations before everyone heads towards the beach just before midnight.

It's one of those uniquely Portuguese traditions that's well worth experiencing.

5. Dance Under the Stars at Vale do Lobo

Summer evenings don't get much better than live music outdoors.

On Saturday 22nd August, Vale do Lobo hosts one of its popular Disco Nights on the golf course, with classic dance hits, food, drinks and plenty of room to dance beneath the stars.

It's a fantastic evening whether you're staying nearby or simply looking for something different to do.

6. Enjoy a Candlelight Concert

Looking for something a little more relaxed?

The internationally renowned Candlelight Concerts return throughout August with beautiful performances illuminated by hundreds of candles.

Programmes this summer include tributes to Coldplay, Hans Zimmer, Michael Jackson and many other iconic artists.

The intimate atmosphere makes these concerts perfect for couples, families or anyone looking for a memorable evening out.

7. Discover a New Algarve Town

Sometimes the best days require no itinerary at all.

Pick somewhere you've never explored before and simply wander.

One of our favourites is Olhão, with its whitewashed streets, bustling waterfront, independent cafés and famous market. Spend the morning browsing local shops before settling into a seafood restaurant overlooking the marina.

Every Algarve town has its own unique personality, and discovering somewhere new is one of the best ways to appreciate the diversity of the region.

8. Watch a Film Under the Stars

Outdoor cinema evenings have become increasingly popular across the Algarve during summer.

One of our favourite venues is Morgado do Quintão vineyard near Lagoa, where you can enjoy a classic film in beautiful surroundings, often accompanied by local wines and food.

It's a wonderfully relaxed alternative to a traditional night out.

9. Feast at the Portimão Sardine Festival

If you enjoy authentic Portuguese food, don't miss the Festival da Sardinha in Portimão.

Held along the riverside from 10th August, this popular event celebrates one of the Algarve's most famous local delicacies with freshly grilled sardines, regional cuisine, traditional crafts and live music every evening.

Even if sardines aren't normally your first choice, the atmosphere alone makes it well worth a visit.

10. Spend the Day at a Waterpark

If you're looking to cool off without heading to the beach, the Algarve's waterparks offer an exciting alternative for all ages.

With thrilling slides, wave pools, lazy rivers and children's splash zones, they're perfect for families wanting a full day of fun away from the sand.

Just remember to book in advance during August, as tickets can sell out quickly.

11. Try Something Creative

Looking for a slower pace?

Across the Algarve you'll find a growing number of creative workshops, from Sip & Paint evenings to pottery classes where you can create your own souvenir to take home.

They're a fantastic way to spend a few hours, especially if you're looking for something different from the usual holiday activities.
